Best way to migrate from WSE 2016 environment to 2019

Hi Guys! first of all I thank you for the splendid job you did!

I've an Hyper-v robust server within 1 WSE 2016 DC, 2 W2016 members, 2 W2019 members, (I've another hyper-v server with a 2016 dc) and some virtual appliance.

I'd like also to upgrade all machine to windows 2019 and:

  1. I know wse2019 is a bad choice (Remote Desktop and so on) so I've to migrate from WSE 2016 to W2019 standard + experience role install following this guide. Have I to migrate and then install experience role? There are several workaround to install essential server experience on a W2019 use or standard (it's only a .net application, I try and it works great)
  2. If I have all w2016 or w2019 (see 1.)  server can I have multiple server with  essential experience role?
  3. Can I make a failover cluster with 2 node if I installed experience role on 1 or 2 nodes?
  4. In your opinion can I make a failover cluster with DC, DNS, DHCP  Print Server and so on and a w2019 server member with essential experience role on it to have vpn, remote access and so on? I've just multiple DC, DNS, DHCP but only microsoft solution to have redundant print server is a failover cluster
  5. in w2016 standard I can install failover cluster role... can I install it on w2019 standard or I need datacenter?

thank you in advance

Hello Federico,

Installing the Essentials Experience on a Windows Server 2019 is not supported. Doing this may put you in a situation that your server might be unrepairable after some update from Microsoft. Although it may work now there is no guarantee it will work in the future.

With Windows Server 2016 Standard edition you can have multiple servers with the Essentials Experience role installed but I have no experience with those in a cluster.

Thank you for your answer!

I'll be very careful and I'll continue to test it but not in a production environment.

If I correctly understood ... I could have multiple W2016 with WSEE installed but only if there isn't a WSE2016 server. is it correct?

In you opinion should I migrate WSE2016 to W2019?

- Connect compare it's a very simple method to join computer.

- WSE 2016 back up clients, in w2019 I have to use an alternative solution

- IN VPN 2016 VPN works only on windows and I can't use rras but it works fine!

- I use also WSE2016 Office 365 / Intune /azure integration and theese are not present in W2019. I should have to use ADSync

- Instead Anywhere Access I could use RD gateway (your tutorial is useful)  but no  remote access site (not so important)

Are there other WSE 2016  functionality that isn't present in 2019?

Do exist something similar in W2019?

Last but not the least: do I can migrate form WSE2016 to W2019 decommissioning WSE2016 and use it as "server member with WSEE role" and use it? should I reconfigure all WSE functionality? will Client connector work?

Thank you in advance
