Hi
I have a customer that has a SBS2011 server - We have already moved their email to 365 so its just a case of migrating their server to a more modern server. The SBS2011 server is a VM on a Hyper V host along with another server (Server 2016 standard) currently just a member server sharing some Sage data.
The SBS is called SERVER1 and the second member server is called SERVER2.
Given SERVER2 was already running with lots of ram and HDD space I thought it would be easy to migrate the SBS to this server. I have gone through all the steps in the guide however at step 9. 'Check AD health' I noticed a 4013 error (see attached)
I have tried doing the regedit steps mentioned here but issue remains - https://serverfault.com/questions/406946/event-id-4013-the-dns-server-is-waiting-for-active-directory-domain-services
I have rebooted the main 1st server (SERVER1) waited 15 mins then rebooted SERVER2. I have waited 3 hours and restarted ADDS services but still the issue remains.
I ran a DCDIAG test and the results simply state 'failed test DNS' (see attached).
I have also ran a nslookup but all I get is "DNS request timed out, Server unknown"
Clearly DNS is not working, if I try and open DNS on the 2nd DC SERVER2 I get asked to 'CONNECT TO A DNS SERVER' and if I select 'This PC' it just states that the service is unavailable.
DNS service is running - restarting the DNS service makes no difference still the same issues.
Please help!!!
David,
Pls, undo those registry entries you created. They are not needed at all and 4013 is not an Error, it is just a warning that AD was not started yet. You will see further on in the logs that all is working regarding the poll of the AD.
Can you send me a private note/email so we can connect with Microsoft Teams? I would like to have a look and fix this issue for you?
There was something wrong with the member server that was to become a DC. Once we installed a new VM with a clean installation of Windows Server 2016 and promoted the server to become a replica DC all was fine.
