Drive Mapping Group Policies not working on workstation

I modified the Group Policy for drive mapping after migration from Server 2012 to Server 2016 and tested on the two servers. This policy works fine on the servers.

However, when I tested on a test workstation (Windows 7) the policy does not seem to work. Mapping still points to the old server shares.

NOTE:

  • Drive mapping policy is in the Default Domain Policy...that's how it was set on the old server...it worked fine there.
  • Ran gpupdate /force numerous times and rebooted the test computer but it does not work.
  • I don't see any errors related to drive mapping or Group Policy application in the Event Viewer. It shows 2 policies implemented...those might be the Folder Redirection policies...which do work.
  • Not sure how to troubleshoot this.
  • The old server policy mapped to \\servername\share. I tested using the \\domain.loca\share as indicated in the instructions. Works for the servers but not the workstation. I modified the policy to use \\servername\share as a test but this made no difference. The workstation seems not to see or process the updated Group Policy.
I can't test with other computers as I am doing this via remote in preparation for going on site Tuesday morning. I hope to have this working prior to that site visit.

    Hello Art,

    Do not modify the Default Domain or Domain Controller Policy. It is considered bad practice. Instead, create a new Group Policy as described in Chapter 15 of the guide.

    Open an elevated command prompt on that Windows 7 workstation and run gpresult /h result.htm. The Result.htm file will be saved in the folder you run the command from. Check the output and see what gets applied.

    How did you map those drives? From a user preference in the policy? If it set to create instead of update I think that is the reason why it does not work.

    I need to write a little help tutorial for adding screenshots.

    I will run that command and create a separate mapping policy object. 

    The Mapping policy is set to Replace. It worked on Server 2012 and does work when applied by the servers. 

    I will post results.
