Error When Attempting to Uninstall Essentials Experience Role

I'm getting an error when attempting to run Remove-WssConfigurationData –Force to remove the Essentials Experience role from my Server 2012 Essentials server.   Error is similar to the one when trying to backup the CA on the same server with PS.  I haven't attempted to run the 2nd command for this task with Remove-WindowsFeature ServerEssentialsRole.  This server didn't have any Office365 or Exchange integration setup.  All client PC connectors have been removed and the client PC backups were also removed.  Its is possible that Server 2012 Essentials has a different cmdlet to remove the Wss Configuration Data?  This server is not R2.

Error is as follows:

PS C:\Windows\system32> Remove-WssConfigurationData –Force
Remove-WssConfigurationData : The term 'Remove-WssConfigurationData' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet,
function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the
path is correct and try again.

Thanks for any input.

Hello,

I am also in this scenario. I am following the guide for WSE 2012 R2 to Server 2019 and had the same exact error. My original server is just WSE 2012 (not R2), and it is also a Dell server that came preloaded with the OS from the factory. In my scenario I tried a few additional steps and continued to get errors so I paused for now. Any insight/help would be greatly appreciated.

I have attached a few screenshots.

Thank you!

You cannot uninstall the Essentials Experience from a WSE 2012 without R2.

Thank you. So is it safe to skip the steps that gave me errors, or should I be following a different guide (I am using this one)?

You have no other choice but you could run into issues demoting the server. If that is the case send me an email and we will fix this

Hello,

You were right. I was unable to demote because the Certificate Server is still installed. Should I just remove the ADCS role on the old server since it can not be migrated, and then try step 17 again?

As a reminder... both steps 15 and 16 failed on the old Server 2012 machine.

When attempting step 17 I was presented with:

Unfortunately, the Essentials Experience role isn't listed anywhere under roles in Server Manager.  But it's definitely running Windows Server 2012 Essentials and the Essentials Dashboard is installed and it works properly.  Under about it has the version Windows Server 2012 Essentials Dashboard version 6.2.9805.6.  I do know that the server was ordered with Windows Server 2012 Essentials pre-installed years back and starting to wonder if Dell had a unique build of Essentials.  I always use the Microsoft Open License version and manually install Essentials from ISO.

I'm starting to wonder if I should just treat the old server as "dead" and purge it from AD along with DNS from the new Windows Server 2019 Essentials.  All  FSMO have been transferred and the new server is running AD/DNS/GC fine without errors.  I have also transferred all data over and adjusted GPOs as needed.  I haven't done the Certificate Authority move yet but there were no 3rd party SSLs installed or required anyway with this setup.  Was never using RWW.  I'm pretty certain I cannot properly demote the old Windows Server 2012 Essentials with some of the Essentials roles installed.  The 26 day time-bomb is running since I transferred the FSMO roles over the weekend.

Yes, I always also use Microsoft media and never from OEM's because of these issues. It is a good idea to remove ADCS because if you do not it can cause issues later. If that has worked try to demote the server you normally would do, if that does not work remove it from the AD.

Is it possible we do a Teamviewer session? I really would like to see your situation from a learning perspective.

I'd love for you to see the setup.  But currently not available.  I'll be in that client office in a few hours, however.  I can email you at that time if you're available as well.
