Exchange 2019 stops allowing email on remote devices randomly

Our Exchange 2019 on-prem server has an issue whereby roughly once every week or so (no pattern just random) mobile devices stop syncing email and the only way we have found to fix is to reboot the server which is obviously not a ideal solution.

The server is a virtual server running Windows 2019 Exchange with the latest CU10 update and all windows updates on a Windows 2019 Hyper V host. Server specs are as follows:

Exchange 2019 (VM):

CPU: Intel Xeon Silver 4110 @ 2.1ghz (6 virtual processors)
RAM: 60GB Ram (20% use typically)
HDD: 1TB (Host uses 10K SAS in RAID 1)
HP Gigabit LAN

The virtual server has a Lets encrypt certificate that references remote.DOMAINNAME.com and on their DNS records remote. points to this server.

The Host computer has had a full diagnostic scan with no issues and has all updates. The virtual Exch 2019 server has latest CU update and all Windows updates.

Event Viewer shows does not show any errors (that I can see) just prior to the reported issue.

Any thoughts?

Hello David,

It could be related to issues with AMSI on the latest CU. What antivirus is running on the Exchange server?

David Hanley

Its Avast (formely AVG) cloud care. Its been fine for 2 years with the same AV - Seems very odd

I don't think its the CU as the issue was present prior to the latest CU update (we thought the CU update may fix).

OK, then we need to crank up logging to get more information. This may help https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/exchange/export-activesynclog?view=exchange-ps

Do those devices show an error when it does not sync?
