User

his operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer window server 2016

Environment:

  • Windows Server 2016
  •

Problem Description:

When I logged into the server using the Administrator account, I can't open any administration/management Windows application such as:

  1. Command Prompt
  2. Computer Management
  3. Any application located in Administrative Tools

A popup called "Restrictions" appears with the message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". I am the system administrator and I've no clue about this issue!

What I Did So Far:

The only thing I did is that I reset the settings of Internet Explorer in the Advanced tab and restarted the server. Unfortunately, it didn't change anything. I didn't know what to do else and I can't seem to find a similar situation as mine. Surely, there are many posts related to this error message, but none of them implies the denial of access to every administrative Windows application with the Administrator account.

Therefore, I'm really seeking the help of the community to tackle this weird and annoying issue.

Thanks in advance.

Can you try to login as domain\admin instead of using the Local Admin account?

Does this also happen on other servers in your domain? Can you try to login to a workstation with the same credentials you use as on the server? What we need to understand if this is something that only happens on that server and nowhere else.
