Hi,
I have a customer who has an sbs2011 server, we only use it for file and print and AD as email is already in 365. I have added a windows 2016 server to the domain, transferred all the file shares over and I have added it as a secondary dc. Having subscribed after the event I see that the document suggest that I should have upgraded FRS to Dfs prior to introducing the new server 2016, is this a big issue or can I do this at any time?.
Hello Jason,
It is better to migrate it before you introduce another DC because DFS is more robust but as you already introduced the other DC I would not upgrade FRS to DFS now. After you complete the migration and you have demoted the old SBS you can proceed with the migration of FRS to DFS. Just don't do it with both DC's around because fixing any issues are then more complicated.
Many thanks for your reply I will do as you suggest, can I just ask what steps I should take to be totally sure that my new 2016 dc is operating ok. Finally I am looking to move the DHCP service over to the 2016 server tomorrow, in doing so am I right in saying that the sbs2011 server will not want to shut down after I have moved this, it is only when I move the fsmo roles that it will shutdown after 21 days?.
In the guide, we mention several ways to check if all is well and please also read Understanding Active Directory Health during an Active Directory migration and tools you can use like repadmin and dcdiag. In addition to this, you can ask me to do a final check for you under premier support.
Yes, as soon as you move FSMO roles the 21 days kick in
