SBS2011 to Server2016 standard w/ 2 Hyper-V servers

I'm at step 7 of the migration from SBS2011 to Windows Server 2016 using Hyper-V.

The goal is to have 2 Hyper-V servers, one running Exchange. Should the new server have any software installed at this point in the migration?

The goal is to have 2 Hyper-V servers, one running Exchange.

I assume you mean two Virtual Machines on one Hyper-V host? One VM that runs the new DC and the other one as your Exchange Server?

Should the new server have any software installed at this point in the migration?

I am not sure what you mean by this? Pls, explain. I normally setup two VM's and make sure they have all the updates installed. Exchange Server 2016 should not yet be installed.

I have 2 virtual machines on one Hyper-V host. Exchange is not installed.

Step 7 installs Windows Server. Where is it insalled? The new server already has Windows server installed.

Now I understand. The new replica DC is installed on one of the two VM's you have created on the Hyper-V host. Does that make sense?

Yes.

And I don't know what to do next. I'm at step 7 where I am supposed to install Windows Server.

OK, on one of the two VM's install Windows Server 2016 and follow the steps of chapter 7 of How to migrate SBS 2011 to Windows Server 2016 Standard or Datacenter

Still a bit confusing...lol...

Quote " I have 2 virtual machines on one Hyper-V host. Exchange is not installed "

What is this ' Host ' , is it Hyper V server or is it Windows 10, Server 2016 or something else... all can be a Hyper V host.

p.s Mariette, I dont see an option to have email notification on this post ?

On a typical SMB environment, you have one physical server that is the Hyper-V host and that is the only role installed. Never install AD Domain Services or Exchange Server on your Hyper-V Host. We have two Virtual Machine on this host

  • Virtual Machine [1] - Windows Server 2016/2019 + roles needed to be a DC and File/Print server and possibly also DHCP,
  • Virtual Machine [2] - Windows Server 2016/2019 + roles needed to run Exchange Server 2016/2019
Does this make sense?

Yes Mariette, you are correct but was asking the  OP what is his Hyper V host.. If he installed Server 2016 there are additional licensing issues... If its Hyper V server then he is good to go, if its on Windows 10.. what is he doing if its a production environment, what is the spec of the W10 machine..

Just trying to help / advise OP on licensing and understanding what he is doing as you were confused on his original post... :-)

p.s all good I got notification by email...

No, it will never be a Windows 10 machine with the Hyper-V role installed. That is for testing stuff, never for production. Hyper-V server core is obviously free. With Windows Server 2016 Standard you can have one Host and two Virtual Machines, the license will cover that scenario.

I am working with Gary on his migration for now.

Licensing is soooo confusing on 2016 now with core licensing...

I understand if doing Essentials can install Essentials with no xtras ( DC etc )  as Host and then have 2 x VM for Essentials and exchange. If however host is vanilla 2016 server cost is extra.... What is the spec of server please … :-)

You are so helpful to us all, sure it will go smoothly.

Bill

p.s where my kit #71...lol

No, this is not correct. You may use Essentials Media to install one Hyper-V Host but you have the right to virtualize your Essentials instance but NO OTHER virtual machines are allowed. Use Hyper-V core, much better.

Oh shoot.. as always you are correct Mariette..

And agree Hyper V core is the way.. don't be scared, just follow  these two great tutorials...

  1. https://server-essentials.com/support/install-and-configure-microsoft-hyper-v-server-2016
  2. https://server-essentials.com/support/install-and-configure-rsat-on-windows-10-and-make-it-a-management-workstation-that-connects-to-a-hyper-v-2016-core-server-in-a-workgroup

When installing hyper V , I personally split partition, first for hyper V and rest for your VMs, format them at install stage as easier later.

Once Hyper V installed remember your DOS commands , cd D: , md foldername … lol
