Yes, this can be done. You need to check the Group Policy and make the necessary changes. The first screenshot show the setting that actually steers the way the policy behaves when you remove it, the second screenshot shows you how to Unlink (disable) the policy.
After doing these two steps you must reboot, logon and run GPUpdate /Force THREE times on each workstation that is joined to the domain and check the Logs for issues. I would implement this, let the users work for at least a week and then check if all went well.
