Uninstall Exchange 2007 shows succedded but Exchange files are still on server

I'm doing an SBS2008 migration to Server 2016 and ran the process to uninstall Exchange 2007.  It ran through all the steps like in the guide getting all successfuls.  Although the "Management Tools" was not listed during the removal process as in guide screenshot.

1. The files are all still in Program Files

2. Exchange 2007 still shows in Add/Remove Programs

3. The Exchange services are all gone except for the SBS Pop Connector service.

4. Registry shows these entries:

ADSIEdit shows the CN=Services CN=Microsoft Exchange but it is empty which I believe is good

When I tired to rerun setup.com /mode:uninstall now it fails.  I assume as it was uninstalled.

Can I proceed under the assumption that Exchange 2007 was removed and complete the migration?

Hello Glenn,

Can you have a look in the ECP on the new server if that only server listed is your Exchange 2013? You wrote that you are going to Exchange 2016 but that cannot be a direct path, I assume you know this from the guide.

Sorry, I didn't specify.  I've already migrated the mailboxes of Exchange 2007 to Exchange Online over a year ago.  I am now migrating the SBS 2008 to Server 2016 with Essentials Experience role.  I was removing the Exchange 2007 that we haven't used on SBS for over a year as per step 21 of migration guide which states that Exchange should now de removed and I followed instructions on https://server-essentials.com/support/uninstall-exchange-server-2007-from-sbs-2008.

When I open ECP on SBS 2008 it now shows everything blank

Ah OK, now I get it. It seems that the Exchange Organization has been removed and AD cleaned up but management tools were not uninstalled. I would not bother about and move on. If you encounter problems during the demotion of the SBS open a ticket on premier support and I will fix it for you

Everything went fine.  I just have a question.  Do you have a guide for removing old SBS related entries in Active Directory.  There seem to be many but I'm not sure which I can safely remove.  Also, the old SBS computer object still appears under OU=SBSComputers after it has been changed to WORKGROUP.  When I go to delete it mentions that it contains other objects and if I want to delete them.  There is also a check box about if I wish to use a server control to delete the subtree.  Should I check it on?  I maybe helpful to add to migration guides.

Thanks

  1. No, we do have a guide for deleting and removing objects in the AD because that can have unwanted effects. Instead, create an OU named 'Old objects' and move the objects you plan to delete and then disable the objects. Leave it there for some time and if you find no problems you may delete them.
  2. I would also leave the SBS server computer object in place because if you ever need to have the SBS back in the network joining it will re-use the computer account.
  3. Do not check 'delete the subtree' if you delete the old server computer account.
Deleting accounts will never be part of the migration guide for legal reasons.
