User without client computer asked for network credentials on old, demoted SBS2011 server

SBS2011 migrated to Server 2016 Essentials

One of the users connects to a member server via RDP. That particular user has no client machine connected to the domain. Now after the final steps of the migration he gets problems when connecting to the member server (2012 R2) via RDP. After logging in successfully he is asked to "Enter your credentials to connect to:  OLDSBS2011".

Since that server is no longer part of the domain it causes problems...What could be causing this?

Did you use RWW on the SBS 2011? Did you go to a portal like 'remote.yourdomain.com'? If that is the case you need to configure that on the new server from the Essentials Dashboard.

RWW was activated on the old server, but connections to the member server didn't use RWW.

Instead they used the regular "Remote Desktop" application (mstsc.exe) connecting to member server's IP-address.
So it is when connecting directly via RDP this user gets the prompt to login to the old SBS-server.

Found a solution:

In registry   "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" were several references to the old server. Changed them to new server name and location.

Problem solved!
