I have just finished a migration from SBS 2011 to WSE 2016. Everything works (although I had to turn on SMB v.1 for network browsing) except Windows search.
The user folders are redirected to the server and when a search is performed results are displayed. However there are two problems. One is that the results are not clickable so the appropriate cannot be launched. The other issue is that all of the results have blank icons and seemingly no association since no file info is displayed either (Date, type, size). It is worth noting that the associations and icons work as expected when not searching.
I have rebuilt the index on the local machines as well as the server. A third party indexing program works fine on the server but I do not want to have to purchase the business edition to extend the capabilities to the network. Search was fine with SBS 2011 running and folder redirection was enabled.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Peter,
SMBv1 must have been disabled before you started the migration. It is enabled by default on an SBS 2011 but I have also situations where it got disabled. What client OS do you have?
All of the clients are WIN 10 1809. The most problematic was a new workstation with a clean install of the OS. It was problematic because 2 Qnap NAS devices were visible on the network and both servers (2016) could see all of the network. Enabling SMBv1 resolved the LAN issue but it would be good to know to get everything working without it so that I would not have exposure to the security issues etc. of SMBv1.
Also, it seems as if I have resolved the search issue by disabling UAC on the WSE 2016. I got a hint from https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1959591-windows-server-2016-goodbye-search-or-enable-uac-for-admins-pick-your-poison.
