Migrating customer from SBS 2008. They have already migrated email from Exchange to Rackspace. Installed new Server 2016 Standard. Host configured with 32 GB RAM and RAID 6 (including hot spare) with 3.2 TB storage. Storage Spaces has not been configured. Installed VM for LOB application first, as customer needed for LOB application upgrade. This VM was configured as member server with 4 GB RAM (Dynamic) and 500 GB storage. I am now ready to install second VM that will become the Domain Controller. Current file storage needs are about 750 GB. Since the requirements for the DC itself are only about 60 GB, I am looking for guidance on how to configure for file storage needs. I think my best bet would be to create a 100GB VM for the DC and expand the storage on the LOB VM to accommodate file storage. Any guidance is welcome. Thanks.
Hello Keith,
Welcome to the site and thank you for subscribing!
I would create a dedicated 'system' virtual disk for the new DC and assign at least 150 GB and make it dynamic so that it can grow if needed. For data, I would then create another disk.
During the installation of Active Directory Domain Services, more specifically the part where you promote the server to become a domain controller you are asked to specify the location of the AD DS database, log files and SYSVOL. For large organizations, it is needed that you put those on a different drive for performance reasons but as long as you do not have thousands of users there is no need.
