How to setup and configure a Hyper-V host in a migration scenario from SBS 2008 or 2011

This is your Hyper-V Companion tutorial that comes as a free add-on for all migration kits from SBS 2008 or 2011 to a new Domain Controller and one member server that runs Exchange Server or any other workload you want to virtualize. We will install the host with the Hyper-V role and build two Virtual Machines.

We have written this free add-on with the admin in mind who has maintained SBS 2008 and SBS 2011 and has little experience with Hyper-V and Powershell in general. All installation steps are done with the GUI and mouse, no Powershell involved this time.

On what kind of hardware you are going to do this is out of the scope of this guide but as a minimum, I recommend an HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen10 Server or other brand equivalents with at least 128 GB Ram and 4 drives in a Raid 10 array. If you can effort SSD’s in your server go ahead and get 4 of those. If you do not have the money for that try to invest in more than just 4 drives in your Raid array, for example, 8 smaller drives. A good place to use for your Raid calculation is here http://www.raid-calculator.com/.

In this guide, we use Windows Server 2019 but you can also use it for Windows Server 2016.

There are three scenarios for which you can use the companion tutorial.

  1. Install everything as described and start from scratch on the Virtual Machines, not a migration.
  2. Install everything as described and virtualize the SBS as described in Virtualize your SBS 2008 or 2011 and run it as a virtual machine on Hyper-V server and start the migration. This is my preferred way of migrating any server.
  3. Install everything as described and migrate the SBS 2008 or SBS 2011 while the SBS is still running on the physical hardware.

Learn how to set up a Hyper-V Host with two Virtual Machines that will be the new home for your Domain Controller and Exchange Server in a migration scenario or a completely new installation. Important: This companion guide is a free add-on for all the SBS 2008 and 2011 migration kits!
