Post 2003 to 2016 Essentials Questions

After adding Server 2016 Essentials to a 2003 Standard domain and making it the DC, I added all the computers using the Connector. Users and computers appear in the Dashboard and AD. On the 2003 server, there was a share named Users to which each person had personal access. When I create a new user on 2016, the user gets such a folder in c:\server folders\users. I want to move all the User folders from 2003 and give the same user access security. Is there a way to do this without manually re-creating security ...

Post Migration - The Old Server Is Still Listed in AD "Confirm Subtree Deletion"

The migration is finished. DNS is cleaned up. I was going through AD computers and saw the old server even though I had demoted it and disjoined it from the domain. When I went to delete the computer object 'XYZserver" in Active Directory, it asked me to confirm subtree deletion. Since I no longer use nor need this server I assume that's ok. Can I go ahead and delete the old server computername object from AD and it's associated 'subtrees'?

Post-deployment Configuration failed: Configuration required for DirectAccess and VPN (RAS) on Windows Server 2016

After what seemed a successful, new Windows Server 2016 Standard installation and CertifyTheWeb installed Let's Encrypt SSL Certificate, I have an alert in the Server Manager:  Post-deployment Configuration failed: Configuration required for DirectAccess and VPN (RAS) at . I clicked on "Open the Getting Started Wizard" and get the message: "File C:\Windows\system32\RAMgmt.UI.exe is not available because the required management tools are not installed.  Use the Add Roles and Features Wizard to install the Remote Server Administration Tools." I went to the Add Roles and Features Wizard, but cannot find Remote Server ...

Powershell error on Step 7, part 17 (SBS2011 to Server 2019 migration)

I received the following error on step 7, part 17 (see screenshot) when running the script: Install-ADDSDomainController -NoGlobalCatalog:$false -CreateDnsDelegation:$false -CriticalReplicationOnly:$false -DatabasePath "C:\Windows\NTDS" -DomainName $currentDomain -InstallDns:$true -LogPath "C:\Windows\NTDS" -NoRebootOnCompletion:$true -SysvolPath "C:\Windows\SYSVOL" -credential $cred -Force:$true -Confirm:$false -SafeModeAdministratorPassword (ConvertTo-SecureString 'ADRestoreModePassword_ChangeThis' -AsPlainText -Force) I checked that the domain admin was part of Schema Admins and Enterprise Admins (which it was). I noticed that the script created the new computer account (in a disabled state) on the small business server but the actual 2019 server was still in a workgroup so I enabled the account, moved it to the Domain ...

Pre-Windows 2000 Domain Name

In migrating this Server 2003 Standard server to 2016 Essentials, I keep seeing an old domain name: HAYESW2K. The current domain is hayes.transport and this is what shows on the new server. Researching this a bit, I looked at the AD for Domains and Trusts on the 2003 server and see an entry named Domain name (pre-Windows 2000): and that shows HAYESW2K. The Domain functional level is Server 2003 as is the Forest functional level. I "think" everything is okay but I'm wondering why I see logon prompts for HAYESW2K\administrator rather than hayes.transport\administrator. Is this something to ...

Printer defaults with printers on new Windows 2019 server

Hi, I'm migrating from SBS2011 STD to Windows 2019 STD and have successfully exported/imported the printers to the new server. On the old SBS2011 I had my 3 x Ricoh printers NOT set up using a GPO as assumed in the migration guide on Step 15 " We assume that you have deployed printers on the old server according to How to deploy and install printers using group policies. Problem accessing member server after demoting SBS2011-server (migrating to Server2016 Essentials)

Hi! I probably made a giant mistake... Totally forgot a member server in the migration process. So I have not performed step 13 "Remove old SBS 2011 Client Agents" and step 15 "Install the connector software from the WSE2016" on the member server. Problems with Traveling Laptops on Windows Server Essentials Domain Network

In several of our WSE 2012 R2 networks, one or more of the workstations are laptops, which serve dual purposes.  They function as a network workstation on the Essentials domain office network.  In that environment, the laptops are set up with the standard Essentials configuration (e.g., DNS service provided by the Essentials server, which has a fixed IP address, etc.).  That works fine until the second laptop purpose is invoked. The management personnel that have laptop workstations also need to use them when they travel.  When used this way, they primarily connect to wireless networks.  Unlike the ...

Prompting for Administrator or Other user when hitting control-alt-delete after policy reset

Hello, I just completed all steps in your SBS2011 to 2016 migration documentation. After doing step "Reset Default Domain and Default Domain Controllers policy (optional)", the workstations are bring up the administrators logon or another user when hitting control-alt-delete to login. You can select "other user" and logon but I would prefer to have it the way it used to be before going through the last step. I did backup the policies (per your instructions). Can I just import them back or do you know a way to disable this type of login in to the workstations? ...

Proper Migration Kit for moving SBSe 2011 to Server Standard 2019

I learned the hard way that simple copying of SBSe 2011 client data does not make for a clean system upgrade.  I need to include user's Redirected Folders and Active Directory.  Which of the kits sold here are recommended for migrating Windows Small Business Server Essentials to a new Windows Server Standard 2019? Public Folder Migration Failed

Hi Mariëtte, It's me again, your problem child. :-)  Today I followed the instructions to migrate public folders. At first everything went as expected; the only thing I was not sure about was how to verify whether the number of public folders was correct. (The script found 58 public folders, and the number of public folders users can see in Outlook is definitely fewer than that.) I assumed that the public folder count must have included some system, hidden public folders. Since every other step in your guide ran as expected, I proceeded. I started the migration batch ...

I'm going through my first one now, and have a question on Step 9 'Migrate files, folders, and shares from SBS 2008 with DFSR'. I have completed the replication, it all worked as expected. Users will never notice anything happened and if you are done just break the replication set." My specific questions are: Where you say 'change the UNC path to the ...

Question on DFS on 2016 Server after migration

Finished migrating from SBS 2011 to 2016 Essentials completely. Follow up questions re: DFS Management - I followed your process in Chapter 12 to remove the replication folders that we created during Chapter 9.  But DFS Management on the 2016 Essentials still has references in the namespace to the two default shared Essentials folders (Company and Users) that we never used for replication purposes, plus one additional shared folder I created from the Essentials dashboard that I also was NOT going to replicate. My question is three-fold: (1) do I need to do anything with ...
