Folder Redirection Permissions

I have a question related to your document on How the administrator can gain access to redirected folders owned by domain users and which are created by a policy using ‘grant the user exclusive rights’. It looks like from our testing you have to rerun it every time you either add a new user or make a change to the WSE Folder Redirection Policy. Is that correct?   Our test went like this: We ran the script and it did change the permissions for the users that were already created and that ...

FRS has been migrated to DFSr but logs show journal wrap error a year ago

Hi, I have an SBS2011 server and one of the checks was for FRS errors. I got this reported Category: Configuration Source: 229 Issue: The server is in a journal wrap condition. Impact: In a journal wrap condition, the system volume is not shared. As a result, the domain controller cannot replicate with other domain controllers. Additionally, the server cannot authenticate network users until the journal wrap condition is resolved.   The FRS was migrated last year to DFS so FRS isn't running and refuses to run (DFS is the ...

FRS to DFRS Migration Error - How to proceed?

I have an issue with the FRS to DFRS Migration. Setup is 4 sites with a DC on each and 2 sites with a RODC each (so 6 all together). I have checked the AD health etc and all OK so I ran the  dfsrmig /setglobalstate 1 command, went away and came back a hour or so later and checked the progress with  dfsrmig /getmigrationstate and all had progressed apart from 1 of the RODC servers. I left it over night and the same. dfsrmig /getmigrationstate The following Domain Controllers are not in sync with ...

GPO -- Inconsistent permissions message

Thanks, Mariette for fixing the issue today with the shared folders not appearing on the 2016 Essentials folder (after a successful migration from SBS 2011). Tonight I was going to install Windows 10 ADMX files to Group Policy on this 2016 server. But when I opened up GPM to check things out first, I clicked on the 'default domain controller policy', and it displayed the following message: "The permissions for this GPO in the SYSVOL folder are inconsistent with those in Active Directory. It is recommended that these permissions be consistent. To change the SYSVOL permissions ...

Grace Period with Essentials Role on Standard Server

I'm planning to migrate to two VMs from SBS2008. One VM will be a domain controller and the second will be used as a SQL server with a LOB App. Creating member servers on the existing SBS domain can be executed first but can the Essentials Role be held back until the new SQL server LOB is operating and the data and printers have been migrated? Does the 21 days grace period still apply to the Essentials Role on a Standard server as well as the Essentials Server with the 25 user limit?

Group Policy not applying on one workstation after migration

I have one station that will not take the new policy after migration and still has folder redirection pointing at the old server, still showing old server mapped drives not the new updated ones.  I've tried everything short of removing and re-adding to the domain.  If I do a gpupdate /force it asks to log off and I do that and log back in with no change.  I have rebooted and logged out/in many many times.  Any suggestions on what else to try?

Home folder on Server 2016 Essentials

On Server 2012, creation of a user account also created a home folder for users in \\server\users\%username%. Not sure if this was a feature of Server 2012 Essentials. In any case. all users had a home folder created with permissions assigned only to them. It gets mapped to a drive letter. After migrating to Server 2016 with Essentials Role, creation of user accounts does not also create a home folder...the drive mapping fails due to the lack of a network location for the mapping. Is this something that changed in 2016? I checked two other client ...

Home lab: mxing WORKGROUP and domain

My desire is to put up a small domain while not disrupting the existing WORKGROUP. The domain would be a learning lab for getting my hands dirty learning and dealing with Windows Server roles & AD, DC, GPO, etc. I'm a neophyte. And I am willing to do a lot of trial and error experiments -- even if it means restarting by wiping out the OS and reinstalling it. The existing WORKGROUP is supporting 5 W10 Pro PCs along with a number of devices attached to the LAN, e.g. a SONOS music system. Additionally, these WINTEL ...

How can Mac (OS/X) computers connect to Server 2016 Essentials VPN?

Clients working remotely with their Macs are trying to connect to the Server 2016 Essentials VPN. Windows 10 computers work fine. The Mac users need a Shared Secret. I don't know what that is because it's not how the remote access services were set up in Essentials and the shared secret is not needed for Windows computers. Is there a way for Macs to connect to the VPN? Thanks. --Art

How do I change the branded RWA Login Page on a OEM installed Windows Server Essentials 2016

I have purchased a server from Dell, and it is the first one that actually had Server Essentials 2016 preinstalled. Usually, I install SE16 myself. On the sign-in page, there is a little link that says dell.com. I would like to remove it. Changing the homepage links in RWA settings do not change this.

How do I eliminate the automatic connection of Z: to \\sbs2011\USERSHARES\username ?

I've completed all of the required steps for the migration from my 7.7 year old SBS2011 box to my brand new Windows Server 2019 Essential box. One niggling problem: When I login to a laptop -- or even the WS2019E box -- I still get drive Z: connected to \\sbs2011\USERSHARES\ben (my login name). I've hunted around online trying to find an answer, to no avail. I tried hunting around in Active Director and Group Policies, but couldn't find any setting for this. And no amount of Google searching has turned up an explanation or solution. ...

How See Anywhere Access/Remote Web Access Security Certificate?

When an AA/RWA certificate has expired, on the remote side, the error message on the attempted connection screen shows a lot of details about the certificate.  Under normal circumstances (while the RWA/AA certificate is still working), is there a way to see detailed information about the certificate (including the expiration date)?  Perhaps this can be done through ISS (Internet Information Service) on the server? I realize this is a basic question, but security certificates are an area that I have no experience with. Thanks.

How to get access to DHCP GUI tool

Migrating Server 2012 to 2016. I moved DHCP settings to the new server and removed DHCP role from the old DC and installed on the new DC. Did all this with PowerShell commands as in the Migration Guide.  I'd like to have the DHCP GUI added in addition to managing DHCP via PowerShell. DHCP doesn't appear in the Administrative Tools list. How can I add it? Many thanks. --Art

How to migrate skipped largeitem messages during migration from Exchange 2010 to Office365

How to secure Remote Web Access

Hi, I currently am running Windows Essentials 2016 with the built in VPN and remote web access feature. My insurance company is saying I don't meet compliance because port 443 is open to the public. How do I make this port or feature secure? I can close the port but then remote access won't work. I have tired creating a rule in Windows Firewall to only allow certain IP addresses but that doesn't seem to work. When I add a remote IP address to allow, it allows all to access again.  Any ideas? Thank you.

Hyper-V Server 2019

Hi Mariette, I'm wondering if you will have similar guides like below for Hyper-V 2019: ttps://server-essentials.com/support/install-and-configure-microsoft-hyper-v-server-2016 https://server-essentials.com/support/install-and-configure-rsat-on-windows-10-and-make-it-a-management-workstation-that-connects-to-a-hyper-v-2016-core-server-in-a-workgroup Seems that the management tools are somewhat different with 2019.   To be clear, I'm looking to install the following on new hardware and then setup 2 VMS:   https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-hyper-v-server-2019   Thank you

Hyper-v servers won't boot

On Windows Server Std 2016, I'm trying to create 2 hyper-v servers. At first one server would boot to a cd. The second would try to boot off the network. After serveral iterations, I deleted the virtual disks and created 2 new virtual servers, generation 2. Now they both try to boot off the network. I'm using the downloaded Microsoft Windows Server 2016 .iso file. How to I fix this so they boot?
