We use WSE 2012 R2 for our home office. Server backups are failing and it won't let me alter the backup configuration. Not sure what is happening. I can still access the server and it continues to backup my PC's. I'm at a crossroads. I love the functionality of WSE 2012 R2. I need the remote access and I want it to backup my PC's, as well as itself. I want it to be a domain controller as well as a file server. However, it seems the latest versions would allow it to be a DC and a ...
I know there is a bit of nuance in every migration. We are looking to migrate without utilizing the Essentials Experience on the target server. We intend to do the built-in AD integration with Office 365, where synchronization goes up to the cloud but not down. I ask the question because most of the guides involve Essentials or Essentials Experience. Any of your guides match that scenario? If not, is there something I should look out for? We were planning to use Migration Wiz to make the synchronization of mailboxes easier. Do you guys feel that ...
Hi, I have a customer who has an sbs2011 server, we only use it for file and print and AD as email is already in 365. I have added a windows 2016 server to the domain, transferred all the file shares over and I have added it as a secondary dc. Having subscribed after the event I see that the document suggest that I should have upgraded FRS to Dfs prior to introducing the new server 2016, is this a big issue or can I do this at any time?.
I am hoping to move my client to Server 2025 from 2011 (having done migrations to 2022 for other clients before) but since 2025 doesn't support any AD before 2016 I am trying to figure out how to do this. Would it be possible to migrate to a tempdc running 2022 and then redo the part where all the AD roles, DHCP, DNS etc are then moved from the 2022 to the 2025 server? Has anyone done this before?
Our client has already implemented AD Connect, and now we're doing a migration from a 2008 DC up to 2019. Is it necessary to remove AD connect in order to do this or can we leave Azure as-is and then reconnect from the new 2019 Domain Controller? Thanks for any thoughts!
I found server-essentials after I had basically migrated most of an SBS 2008 server to Windows Server 2016. I am ready to uninstall Exchange at this point, but realized I had not performed the FRS to DFSR migration as is detailed in the Migration Guide. I will only have the one Win2K16 Server (DC) at the end of this as this is a small company. My question is, do I really need to migrate FRS to DFSR before retiring the SBS 2008 Server or will the Win2K16 Server run just fine using FRS? Thanks in ...
Hello, I am migrating SBS2011 to Windows 2016. I read in one of your articles that printers can be migrated before transferring the FSMO roles. I'm assuming mapped drives can be migrated before moving FSMO roles too? I'd like to do everything I can before moving the FSMO roles (I just don't like working under the time limit issue) but I didn't want to mess anything up because I went out of order in your migration instructions. Also, is there anything else that can be done before moving the FSMO roles? Thanks! Larry
Hi, I am following the guide to do this migration which is going well. However, I have started seeing the error "PDC emulator master in this forest should be configured to correctly synchronize time" in server manager now (it didn't for the first week or so) - are the instructions in the article " Virtualization of your Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials and set time service on your virtualized domain controller " relevant for Windows Server 2016. This is a virtualized environment with Windows Server 2016 as both the Hyper-V host and VM(s). Many thanks, Mike. ...
Hello, I'm preparing to migrate SBS 2011 Standard to Windows Server 2019. The SBS 2011 server I'm preparing for migration doesn't have "Windows Server Solutions Best Practices Analyzer 1.0" installed. And I cannot find a valid link to download it, neither on Microsoft downloads or anywhere else. All links lead to 404 on Microsoft sites. Could someone help me find that Installer ? Kind Regards, Miguel.
We're looking at CodeTwo to handle our Exchange 2010 to Office 365 email migration. How will this impact our migration as we go through the migration guide? Also, I'm assuming that the SBS 2011 Migration Kit + Office 365 DIY is still the right guide to get? Thank you
When migrating from SBS 2011 to a virtual Server 2016 Essentials I plan to have a second virtual server running Exchange 2016. I see that the migration for Exchange is very complicated and time consuming. Why can't I just save each client's mail box as a pst file. Then once the clients are setup in Server 2016 Essentials install Exchange Server 2016 as a new install on the second VM, add the clients manually to it (only 10 clients) and just upload use the pst files to restore each clients mailbox? This seems like it would be a ...
Hi, I have run all the commands up to 7.23 and everything appeared to go smoothly. However in step 7.23 it is advised to run dcdiag /test:topology , this produces the following results: Step 7.23 PS C:\Windows\system32> dcdiag /test:topology Directory Server Diagnosis Performing initial setup: Trying to find home server... Home Server = SL-DC2019 * Identified AD Forest. Done gathering initial info. Doing initial required tests Testing server: Default-First-Site-Name\SL-DC2019 Starting test: Connectivity The host f63338d9-d38b-4e6b-be4e-e8d6bcdbe670._msdcs.saith.local could not ...
I have just started reading through the migration guide and I have a few questions before I start that I hope someone can help with. Firstly the guide states to not start migration until all Exchange 2007 updates etc are installed, as we've already moved our email to O365 is it actually necessary to install these updates? Will they have any bearing on any other part of the migration? My understanding is that once the migration is complete the new server will of course have a different name to the old DC, how does this affect ...
After we have completed the migration guide, is it safe to change the Static IP address of the new Server to that same static IP address of the old server that we are no longer using anymore?
Hi, I'm just following the guide, and am at the stage where I need to migrate mailboxes, however, I can't see anywhere in the guide where it states to change mail flow of the incoming email (port 25) from the old SBS 2011 to the new Exchange 2016 server IP, and also I think that the new Exchange server would also need to have a send connector created at that point as well? I think once the mailboxes have migrated over to the new server, it is at that point that the SMTP port should be ...
Hi! I am migrating from an SBS2011 to a new server hardware with server 2016. As it is not supported to migrate the Exchange Server onto the domain controller, I want to (have to) migrate to Exchange 2016 on the existing hardware of the SBS2011, of course after installing server 2016 on this machine. This will result in the loss of the old Exchange 2010 server on SBS before the new machine is active. Going through the SBS to Server 2016 Essential tutorial the Exchange migration is in the middle of the process, however I need to ...
Hello togehter, I am wondering, at which point, I have to start with the Exchange Migration on this guide. If I finish this guide until the end (demote SBS2011 aso), is the Exchange still up and running? If yes, I would start with Exchange migration after this complete guide, from Exchange 2010 to E2016 and finaly E2019. regards, Thomas
Just checking to see if there are any differences I should know when I migrate a Server Essentials 2012 that is not R2 to Server Standard 2016 to which I will apply the Essentials role. Note that the Server 2012 was changed to Standard so we could accommodate additional users but the Essential role is still installed. I want to be sure there are not quirks that will cause problems. NOTE: The new server will run as a VM on the Server 2016 Standard system. Does that present any issues? Lots of questions. Thanks. ...
Is it ok to use the migration guide for SBS 2011 Essentials to Windows Server 2016 with a new Windows Server 2019 setup? I presume most is all of the same considering the migration from FRS to DFSR is consistent with 2016 and 2019. Thanks. Ken
Hi, We are following the guide to migrate from 2011-2016 and have come across a problem with a command in Powershell. .\SetDNSonSBS2011.ps1 is not recognized as a name of a cmdlet. (We have put the name of our server in instead of SBS2011) Please see Pic attached for error message. (It is the same error when we put in our server name also. Can anyone help with this please? We can't find anything on Google. Many thanks,
Hi, Is it really necessary to complete steps 16-21 (migration sbs 2011 to server 2019) since the sbs server will no longer be used?
I'm doing step by step migration sbs2011 to server 2019. but i don't understand this line: In the Powershell script change ADRestoreModePassword to something that only you know and then run the Powershell commands below. what powershell script do you mean? if i run "ADRestoreModePassword" it is not recognized, i already have an admin password which is the same on the old sbs2011 as on the new server2019. can you help?
Hopefully this is one of the last two migrations I have from SBS 2011 to server 2019! This server is getting flakey and sometimes requires a reboot or two during the day to keep the office up and running. WSUS admin console will not run, it keeps opening and goes to Reset Node, The Exchange server will be moved to Hosted Exchange, I have a back end process from the hosted Exchange site that migrates the information for each user automatically with a administrative account, so I am not concerned about migrating to a local Exchange server. A ...
I goes thru all points of SBS2011 migration to WS2016 and I didn't find steps when should I install Hyper-V and second instance of WS2016 and what order Exchange migration should be done. I see just uninstalling Exchange 2010. Would you send plan point by point including global plan or order to migrate WS2008R2 and Exchange from SBS20011?
I need to migrate from SBS 2011 to Server 2019, but I want to keep the same server (box). The server has the OS on the c: drive and the data files on the e: drive. Exchange was moved to 365 some time ago. SBS is using AADC to sync from SBS to Azure. My goal is to have the current SBS box run 2019 and keep the redirected user files as is on the existing box. The information I see here really doesn't support what I want to do as it seems tailored to move ...
