Populating the WSEInvisibleToDashboard Security Group

Greetings, The AD object (Distinguished Name OU=SBSUsers,OU=Users,OU=MyBusiness,DC= ,DC= ) contains most user accounts, security groups, etc., in a typical SBS 2011 installation. Migrating to Exchange 2016 adds a few "system" accounts. All of these are displayed in the Windows Server Essentials Dashboard in the users section. To hide unnecessary objects (users and groups), one must populate the WSEInvisibleToDashboard Global Security Group using AD Users and Computers. This is an undocumented part of the tutorial. Is it safe instead to move the unwanted objects (say system/arbitration mailboxes) to other OUs (say OU=Users,DC= ,DC= ...

BPA Error Before Migration

I'm working on a migration from Server 2012 Essentials to Server 2019 Essentials.  A run of BPA is pretty clean except for one regarding application pools. Error  Application pools should be set to run as application pool identities.  Security DNS and AD health are good and DCdiag report is clean with all PASS.   The Server 2012 Essentials was improperly updated a while back with .Net 4.5/4.6/4.7, which I know is not supported.  Application Pools are all running at v4.0 level.  The BPA error seems insignificant to the migration but just wanted to confirm ...

Hi Does anyone know where the event viewer alert configuration is for MSExchangeFrontendTransport & MsExchangeTransport. Certificate is expiring on 1st November. Thanks p.s interesting its only happening on exchange server and not Essentials server 2016, wonder when that alert appears...lol

SBS 2011 to 2019/2016 DC Promo Error

Hi, We are finding that any 2011 SBS Server that we had a client migrate to from Server 2003 using the 'Swing' migration is having issues with being DC Promoted out of their domain. For example we have recently migrated three clients from SBS 2011 to Office365 for email and Server 2016/2019, in all cases the DC promotion step to demote the old SBS server has failed with the following error "The directory service is missing mandatory configuration information, and is unable to determine the ownership of floating single-master operation roles." Server 2012- VPN stops working every 30 days when Let's Encrypt auto renews.

I followed the tutorial to setup Let's Encrypt to use with Server 2012 so that users can utilize the VPN through the server.   It works great - for 30 days.   Then the Certify the web app auto-renews the certificate and I get messages from users that the VPN is not working anymore.   If I login to the server and re-run the Anywhere Access wizard, it starts working again.   According to what I have read, this should not be something that I need to do and obviously something is breaking down, but I'm just sure where to start ...

Client Connector for Windows Server Essentials Not Working After Windows 10 v1903 Update

Hello everybody, After client computers update to Windows 10 v1903, they are showing offline in the Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Dashboard.  They can still connect to the shared folders no problem and sign in to the Launchpad, but the Server doesn't know what's up with them because it thinks they are offline; plus, client backups are not happening.  Is anybody else experiencing this?  Is there a newer update for the connector software? Thanks for you help in advance, James

Essentials Connector stays grey - cannot connect to 2016 server

Windows 10 1709 clients and Server 2016 Standard with Essentials Role. DirectAccess is configured on the server, but these clients are directly connected to the network (same subnet as server). The Connector installed without problems a few days ago and immediately after install, the connector was green and a manual client backup initiated from the Essentials console worked fine. Now it stays grey, indicating the server is unavailable/offline ... even though network shares are accessable. Laptops connecting through DirectAccess show online in the Essentials console, while all the IPv4 connected workstations are showing as offline. Maybe this is IPv6 related? ...

Ask a Question

Hello, First of all, I would like to thank you for publishing such excellent documentation in regards with migrating SBS2011 to Server 2016 and then I have a question which I was hoping you would have a quick answer to. We have followed your instructions for migrating SBS2011 standard to Server 2016 all the way to migrating printers (item 15 in your list). Printer migration was also performed successfully for the new domain controller. The next step in your instructions is to Migrate the Certification Authority (Step 16) and uninstall Exchange server. This is the part ...

SBS 2008 to 2016 migration without Exchange, need to update Exchange?

I am preparing to preform a SBS 2008 to 2016 server migration. I am currently not running Exchange on the SBS 2008 (services are disabled) and will not be using Exchange on the 2016 server.  Email is hosted off-site.     In the migration guide, chapter 1, step 4 states that you must install the latest version.   If you do not, this migration may fail.   I am currently at version 08.03.0485.001, which is roll up version 21.   The latest version is roll-up 23 and I have not found roll- up 23 ...

Is DFS needed on a DC after a migration is done?

A recent SBS 2011 migration has been working just until a raid card died.  It's been replaced and the arrays back in order, but the StorageCraft backup is now failing even though it worked find for months.  StorageCraft's answer is that they don't support DFS.  So my question is can DFS be removed/turned off on the DC?   They system is one physical server with three Hyper-V VMs.  DC, Exchange server, and file/app server.

Although I support a number of servers I've never done anything with virtualization (yes I know I'm a bit behind the times) and what I'm looking for is a guide on how to take an existing server and visualize it on to new hardware running Server 2016 with the Hyper-V role enabled. How See Anywhere Access/Remote Web Access Security Certificate?

When an AA/RWA certificate has expired, on the remote side, the error message on the attempted connection screen shows a lot of details about the certificate.  Under normal circumstances (while the RWA/AA certificate is still working), is there a way to see detailed information about the certificate (including the expiration date)?  Perhaps this can be done through ISS (Internet Information Service) on the server? I realize this is a basic question, but security certificates are an area that I have no experience with. Thanks.

After I move a mailbox and open Outlook for the first time, there is a message that "The Administrator made a change that requires Outlook to restart".  Not a problem.  But when I close and reopen Outlook, and look in Account settings, where it used to be connected to "ServerName.IntDomain.local", it now has a "long string of letters and numbers @ExtDomain.com".  This is happening on both internal connected domain computers and external connected workgroup computers.
